Biofuel and environmental protection

The company has always focussed on the use of renewables for energy generation. Since the early start, we have been working on a clear and single trend, i.e. investment in adjustment of heating sector for consumption of local biofuel. Introduction of biofuel has brought a triple advantage: it has cut down emissions, dependence on imported natural gas (coming at higher price than biofuel) and has cut on heating price payable by Vilnius residents.

We have invested over EUR 11.5 million into construction of largest cogeneration boiler in Lithuania running on biofuel. In 2006, a 60 MW capacity boiler station was launched and Vilniaus energija has significantly reduced its consumption of gas, which is 2.5 time more expensive compared to biofuel.

We have also adjusted district boiler station of Naujoji Vilnia to run on biofuel. Boiler station upgrade project, funded by the EU Cohesion Fund, has also involved our own investment of EUR 4.4 million.

Throughout our activities, we have pursued active policy on pollution prevention, which is respected by all companies forming part of Veolia group across Europe.
